What is Astra: Knights of Veda?

Astra: Knights of Veda Hero Art
Final Fantasy? Is that you?

Announced a little more than a couple of months ago, Astra: Knights of Veda, is a 2D RPG with beat 'em up mechanics that is being developed by Flint Games and published by the South Korean HYBE IM. Astra: Knights of Veda, is being developed for Windows, Android, and IOS. Unfortunately, no word about a console release was given up to the time of this writing.

Dragon's Crown Meets Genshin

At first glance, Astra: Knights of Veda shows a lot of similarities with Dragon's Crown, the excellent RPG beat 'em up from Vanillaware. The stylistic graphics, with dark and somber tones, the richness of detail in every scene, and characters with some *ahem* exaggerated features. Although, in Astra, the characters are a little more dressed up than what we saw in Vanillaware's outing. When watching gameplay videos, the impression of being another Dragon's Crown quickly vanishes, thanks to Astra's more complex and in-depth inventory and loot systems, ability to change characters on the fly and, since I mentioned characters, there are 20 of them.

Here is where the Genshin side of the games starts. When starting your game, you will be prompted with a cutscene, telling the game's story, and you will be able to pick the gender of your character. It seems that in Astra, you start with a pre-determined character, but you can unlock new ones randomly. We are not sure how this will happen, but talking to people who tried the brief public test the game had last month, it will be very similar to Hoyoverse's game where you must gather certain items/material to have the opportunity to try your luck. The same can be said about weapons and equipment, or at least, the best ones. Watching some gameplay videos, it is possible to see that there are items lying around in creates that you can pick up, but we are sure that the best ones are locked behind these random rolls.

When it will be released?

So far, there is no word about a release date. A small beta test was available in the Steam Next Fest last October and it is possible that another one will take place sometime in the future. We are looking into it and we will let you know when it will happen.

Being a Gacha Game the game will probably be free to start and to play. But some degree of monetization is expected. So far, we don't know how aggressive it will be, but looking at some screens in the game, it looks like you will have many ways to spend your hard-earned money, and I am not talking in a positive way here. I had some experience with Genshin in my household, and while my daughter didn't spend any money on that game, the opportunities were presented in many insidious ways. We can only hope that Astra is more consumer-friendly.
